Cover Story Current Issue

Physical activity is associated with a marked increase in muscle metabolism and energy turnover. Therefore, maintaining intracellular levels of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) during exercise represents a metabolic challenge for the muscle cell. The increased ATP turnover during exercise leads to accumulation of intramyocellular adenosine monophosphate (AMP) in an exercise intensityand duration-dependent manner because of the adenylate kinase reaction (2ADP ↔ ATP + AMP).
