Cover Story Current Issue

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by abnormally high blood glucose levels resulting from an impairment in insulin action and/or insulin secretion. More than 425 million individuals have diabetes worldwide and projections show this number rising to 629 million by 2045. While type 1 diabetes (T1D) is characterized by autoimmune mediated destruction of insulin producing β-cells, type 2 diabetes (T2D) results from a combination of insulin resistance and β-cell insulin secretory defect, in the long-term resulting β-cell exhaustion and eventually destruction.
